Class Basket Donations EXTENDED THRU Feb. 5th

Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors-There is still a chance to WIN PIZZA!

We will be accepting donations in 2nd period thru February 5th.

If your individual class donation average EXCEEDS $6.00 per student-your class will WIN the 2nd pizza party!

Sophomores - your class has a donor who has already donated a 2 night stay at a beach resort near Santa Cruz (a value of almost $1,500.00!!); you need to raise funds to add a bonfire on the beach, a restaurant certificate, and a spa day!

Juniors - your class is funding the limousine for 10 and a dinner certificate to Wassabi! We need at least $400.00 to get this for the auction.

Seniors - a donor has given your class two tickets to Hearst Castle; you need to make it a weekend with a hotel stay and a dinner certificate - you need to raise $300.00 to get this for the auction.

Remember - all the proceeds from your donation and the money it raises will go toward the purchase of new equipment and furniture for the new school and for activities and programs you are enjoying this year!

 

Congratulations Freshman class - you have met and exceeded your class goal of $400.00 for creating a "basket" for the spring fundraiser live auction!

 

 

 

Peer Mentor Meeting Attention Peer Mentors: There will be a peer mentor meeting on Wednesday, February 3rd at lunch in room 18. We need to plan our spring social events. Please let Mrs. Bird know if you are unable to make the meeting.

 

Parent volunteers needed to serve on UHS Committee
Dear Parents,
Dr. Bushman has requested help from parents with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Accreditation process.

We are looking for 25 parent volunteers from 1-4 pm on March 10th to participate in discussions and work with teachers and student in evaluating UHS programs.

We would prefer parents of students in grades 9-11 as we will ask these same parents to participate in a follow-up meeting next February when we are visited by the WASC team.

To volunteer, please log in to your volunteer account at the UHS web site http://www.csufresno.edu/univhigh/ Once in your profile, select the 'my schedule' tab and you can sign up either from the drop down menu above the calendar or by going to March 10th on the calendar and clicking the date.

Dr Bushman would like a list of parent volunteers in the next few weeks as he would like to provide some handouts to volunteers to review in advance of march 10th meeting.

California Scholastic Federation (CSF) applications are due by
12:15 PM SHARP on Friday, February 12 to Dr. Torrance in person in room 10.
Applications must be ok'd by Dr. Torrance personally.
No applications left in Dr. T's box will be accepted.

Please include:
1. Check for $10.00 payable to UHS.
2. A copy of last semester's grades (copy the report card sent home recently).
3. A completed application form (available in Rm 10).
4. 10 hours of community service from past semester, listed on the back of the application form.

SENIORS: Remember, you need to sign up with senior grades from this or next semester to qualify for Life Member Status.

Attention Parents: AP Fees Due Date is Approaching
AP order forms will be distributed to students tomorrow.
Students need to submit these forms to the main office by Friday, February 5th.
Fees will be collected in the main office during the week of February 15th.
Finaly payments must be submitted by Friday, February 19th.
Each exam is $86 and students are required to take the exam for each AP Course they are enrolled in, unless they choose to have the AP designation and grade augmentation removed from their transcript.
Students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" will receive a discount of $30 per exam, bringing the total cost of each exam to $56.
Checks may be made payable to "UHS."

 

Sophomore Elections!
SOPHOMORES
Elections for the V.P. spot will take place in your English classes on Friday, January 29th.
Speeches to get to know your candidates will take place in the amphitheater at lunch on Thursday, January 28th.
Campaigning will begin on Wednesday January 20th.
Campaigning must be clean, positive, and low-key with no stickers, no bribes, low-budget and good vibes.
Posters must stay within classrooms and must be removed by election day.

 

FAFSA Workshop is Canceled Due to a lack of interest, we have canceled the FAFSA workshop that was previously scheduled for February 3rd. For a list of FAFSA worksops that are being held at other local area schools, please see your child's counselor.

Plans are fully underway for a fun evening that will include dinner, student entertainment, a silent auction, a desert auction, a live auction and raffle prizes.
Save a few tax deductible dollars to help us raise funds to "Furnish the Forum" by helping to purchase brand new classroom furniture, technology needed for a beyond-modern classroom, and other permanent equipment for the new building that is rapidly rising across from the Kremen Education Building.

Help! We need Help!
No more individual teacher baskets!
We are collecting for class packages *weekend getaways, limousine service, game tickets, etc. to sell in our live auction at the Rome Wasn't Built in a Day! event on March 12.
Donate now to pool funds that will be used to create freshman class, sophomore class, junior class, and senior class "baskets."
Every student is asked to donate $5.00, or whatever he/she can afford, to his/her class.
The funds generated by these baskets in the live auction will support Phoenix Alliance to help fund the equipment and furniture that will make our new building a first class high school educational facility.

Contributions will be collected each day in period 2 for the week of January 25-29.

FREE SAT Math Workshop for Juniors
Kaplan will be hosting a free SAT math workshop for our students on Saturday, January 9, 2010 and Saturday, February 6, 2010. Students need to RSVP in Dr. Torrance's class. The 1/9 workshop will be held from 9-12:30 in ED 140 and the 2/6 workshop will be in Connely Arts 101 from 9-12:30. See your counselor with any questions!

 

UCSF Fresno Summer Biomedical Internship Program The UCSF Fresno Biomedical Research program is designated for JUNIORS interested in participating in a summer internship that will allow you to participate in basic and clinical research in fields such as surgery reconstruction, radiology, basic bench science, and epidemiology. Qualified students must submit an application (which are available online at: http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/application.html),a one-page typed questionnaire, a letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a copy of your PSAT or SAT scores. Applications are due Friday, January 29th.

 

NIDDK Step-Up Program The Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in Bethesda, MD would like your help in identifying and recruiting outstanding underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students from your school to participate in our STEP-UP program. The purpose of the NIDDK STEP-UP Program is to expose students to research in the following NIDDK mission areas: diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, and digestive, liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic diseases. To accomplish this goal, the NIDDK STEP-UP program provides research education grants to universities to support summer research experiences for eligible high school students throughout the United States.

Student participants will benefit from the following:

The opportunity to participate in a research project, designed by a skilled mentors, that is intended to enhance the students' research capabilities as well as their knowledge and skills in their particular area of scientific interest.

The opportunity to work full time (40 hours per week) conducting an individualized project in a research lab within close proximity to their home for 8-10 consecutive weeks during the summer.

The chance to visit the world renowned campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (all travel expenses provided) for the Annual STEP-UP High School Scientific Session and Summer Research Presentations where students are given the opportunity to present their research to an audience of their peers, mentors, and scientific experts.

UC Davis Young Scholars Program The UC Davis Young Scholars Program is a summer residential research program designed to expose 40, high achieving high school sophomores and juniors to the world of original research in the natural sciences with emphases on the biological, environmental and agricultural sciences. Participants in the 2010 UCD-YSP will work one-on-one with research faculty and research groups in state of the art laboratories for six weeks. Each student will work on an individual project and prepare a journal quality paper and symposium presentation about their work. In addition to scientific research, the UCD-YSP strives to introduce participants to the climate and culture of living and working on a university campus. Experience Berkeley Application This year's application for Experience Berkeley are available www.stileshall.org Black, Latino & Native American juniors with a 3.5 or higher GPA (class of 2011) get a close, personal look at UC Berkeley

The program identifies promising high school and community college students and brings them to the Berkeley campus in small groups during the summer and school year. At UC Berkeley they are introduced to college life, taken to classes, given admissions feedback on personal statements, financial aid information, and mentoring throughout the application process.

Many current UC Berkeley students said this was a defining experience in their college application and ultimate selection process.

Applications are due by March 1st.

College Latin Tutor Christian Paulsen will be in the study hall room (Rm 13) every Monday and Tuesday from 3-4 for any student who needs extra help in Latin. Please come by to work with him if you are struggling or will struggle with Latin.

 

North Fresno Lions Club hosts speech competition
Are you interested in public speaking? Are you concerned with the conversation surrounding healthcare reform? Do you want to make connections in the community? Are you interested in scholarship money?
The North Fresno Lions Club has invited UHS to represent them in area and regional speech competitions. Come talk to Ms. Bergen for more details. All you have to do is write and deliver your own original speech! Four students from UHS will participate and each one will receive cash prizes at the first round of competition with further opportunities for prizes and scholarship money. The first competition is February 8th; stop by room LS169 anytime. This is open to all students.

ACT Poster Concept Contest The ACT is announcing a contest to encourage students to tap into their creativity and qualify for a scholarship of up to $5,000! Students enter the contest by designing a poster that encourages other students to attend college and take the ACT as their college entrance exam. The winning poster will be used to produce the 2010-2011 ACT test date information poster, distributed to high schools nationwide! CAC Announces 2009-2010 Scholarships! The California Association of Collectors has announced a scholarship for California high school seniors for use at any accredited college, university, or vocational school. Three prizes will be awarded: First ($2,500), Second ($2,000), and Third ($1,500). The scholarship is based upon a one page application and essay on "Importance of Establishing and Maintaining Good Credit during Your College Years." KFC Colonel's Scholars KFC Colonel's scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need to qualify for their Program. Awards are up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board. Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition offers 120 students college scholarships of up to $50,000 and the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. (all expenses paid) to present their research. To enter, students submit a research project that sheds light on a health problem, using the methods of analysis employed by epidemiologists. Epidemiology is the science of exploring patterns of disease, illness and injury within populations with the goal of developing methods for prevention, control and treatment to improve health outcomes. Girls Going Places 2009 Award Program This annual awards program is designed to reward the enterprising spirits of girls ages 12 to 18. Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Their leadership and courage make them true heroesÑand inspirations to us all. Each year, the Barron Prize selects ten winners nationwide. Half of the winners have focused on helping their communities and fellow beings; half have focused on protecting the health and sustainability of the environment.The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes is available to students age 18 and younger who have organized and led a service activity that has clearly benefited other people. Your service activity must have been initiated and motivated primarily by you and cannot have been an assignment for school or work. Additionally, you must demonstrate a positive spirit and high moral purpose. The Barron Prize relies on thoughtful adults to identify and nominate children from the diverse communities in which they live. The Prize accepts nominations on an annual basis and distributes $2,500 awards every fall. American Legion Scholarship American Legion Scholarship is a offering up to $18,000 in scholarship money for the best constitutional speech. This years topics include issues within the following: Amendment 5, Amendment 6, Article 5, and Article 4 Section 3 Para 1. Speak to Mrs. Bergen for more details.

 

Scholarship Opportunities from the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation Are you the child of a vineyard employee or the child of a wine grape grower OR are you interested in studying viticulture/enology? If your family owns a vineyard or is a vineyard employee, you may be eligible for one of 6 scholarships offered to graduating seniors by the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation. At least two scholarships offered provide $1,000 per year for four years at any UC or CSU campus and at least four scholarships offered provide $500 a year for two years at any California community college. Students may study the subject of their choice. For students interested in studying viticulture and/or enology, the Foundation is offering the Robert Miller Scholarship. This scholarship program is for students interested in attending Alan Hancock Community College of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Best Buy Scholarship Program 1000 $1000 scholarships will be offered to high school seniors with solid grades and community service experience. Applications are due by 2/15. Students may apply online at: www.bestbuy.com/scholarships

 

American Iris Society Scholarship A $500 scholarship is available for students who are planning to pursue a career in horticulture, floriculture, or a closely related field. Applications may be obtained from Ms. Patterson and are due by April 2, 2010.

 

Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Scholarship The Tzu Chi Foundation is pleased to announce its annual scholarship program for students with financial need and outstanding academic achievement. Selected applicants will receive $1000. The application deadline is 03/01. See Ms. Patterson for an application.

 

Cabrillo Clubs of California Scholarships - Seniors The Cabrillo Clubs of California are offering $500.00 scholarships to high school seniors of Portuguese heritage. To qualify: 1. student must be of Portuguese descent on father's or mother's side, be a US citizen or permanent resident 2. maintained a minimum of 3.50 grade point average in high school and be a graduating senior of a California high school 3. meet all requirements set down by an accredited university or college of the student's choice 4. participated in at least three extra-curricular activities while in high school 5. present three letters of recommendation Applications are available online at www.cabrillocivicclubs.org or come see the counselor interns in room 12. Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) 2010 The Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award is open to graduating high school senior scholar athletes. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in academics, athletic performance, leadership and community service. SAMMY winners receive a scholarship of $7,500, an awards weekend at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and the opportunity to be pictured in USA TODAY and other national publications, awarded to each of the 25 regional winners.

California Table Grape Workers Scholarship The California Table Grape Commission is accepting applications for scholarship funds offered by the state's fresh grape farmers. Three $16,000 scholarships are available to 2010 graduating seniors or high school graduates who plan to attend a four-year college or university in California.
Scholarship applications are available to download at the commission's website, www.grapesfromcalifornia.com or come see one of the counselor interns.

Civil Service Employees Insurance Company's Scholarship To promote driver safety and awareness among young people, Civil Service Employees Insurance Company (CSE) will award up to two $1,000 and eight $500 scholarships, one each to a child of a full-time public employee, based on an essay discussing ways the teenage automobile accident rate can be reduced.

Student performers NEEDED!

Auditions on February 6th
The spring fundraiser theme this year will be "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day!"
SKITS(in Latin?), SONGS about classical Rome, modern Rome, anything ITALIAN - LATIN JAZZ?
Be creative - check with your performance teachers.
Auditions to be held in Room 18 on February 6th between 9:00 and 11:00.

Parent volunteers needed to serve on UHS Committee
Dear Parents,
Dr. Bushman has requested help from parents with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Accreditation process.

We are looking for 25 parent volunteers from 1-4 pm on March 10th to participate in discussions and work with teachers and student in evaluating UHS programs.

We would prefer parents of students in grades 9-11 as we will ask these same parents to participate in a follow-up meeting next February when we are visited by the WASC team.

Class Basket Report!!!

Congratulations Freshman class - you have met and exceeded your class goal of $400.00 for creating a "basket" for the spring fundraiser live auction!

Sophomores - your class has a donor who has already donated a 2 night stay at a beach resort near Santa Cruz (a value of almost $1,500.00!!); you need to raise funds to add a bonfire on the beach, a restaurant certificate, and a spa day!

Juniors - your class is funding the limousine for 10 and a dinner certificate to Wassabi! We need at least $400.00 to get this for the auction.

Seniors - a donor has given your class two tickets to Hearst Castle; you need to make it a weekend with a hotel stay and a dinner certificate - you need to raise $300.00 to get this for the auction.

Remember - all the proceeds from your donation and the money it raises will go toward the purchase of new equipment and furniture for the new school and for activities and programs you are enjoying this year!

 

Attention Parents: AP Fees Due Date is Approaching
AP order forms will be distributed to students tomorrow.
Students need to submit these forms to the main office by Friday, February 5th.
Fees will be collected in the main office during the week of February 15th.
Finaly payments must be submitted by Friday, February 19th.
Each exam is $86 and students are required to take the exam for each AP Course they are enrolled in, unless they choose to have the AP designation and grade augmentation removed from their transcript.
Students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" will receive a discount of $30 per exam, bringing the total cost of each exam to $56.
Checks may be made payable to "UHS."

 

Sophomore Elections!
SOPHOMORES
Elections for the V.P. spot will take place in your English classes on Friday, January 29th.
Speeches to get to know your candidates will take place in the amphitheater at lunch on Thursday, January 28th.
Campaigning will begin on Wednesday January 20th.
Campaigning must be clean, positive, and low-key with no stickers, no bribes, low-budget and good vibes.
Posters must stay within classrooms and must be removed by election day.

 

FAFSA Workshop is Canceled Due to a lack of interest, we have canceled the FAFSA workshop that was previously scheduled for February 3rd. For a list of FAFSA worksops that are being held at other local area schools, please see your child's counselor.

No more individual teacher baskets!
We are collecting for class packages *weekend getaways, limousine service, game tickets, etc. to sell in our live auction at the Rome Wasn't Built in a Day! event on March 12.
Donate now to pool funds that will be used to create freshman class, sophomore class, junior class, and senior class "baskets."
Every student is asked to donate $5.00, or whatever he/she can afford, to his/her class.
The funds generated by these baskets in the live auction will support Phoenix Alliance to help fund the equipment and furniture that will make our new building a first class high school educational facility.

FREE SAT Math Workshop for Juniors
Kaplan will be hosting a free SAT math workshop for our students on Saturday, January 9, 2010 and Saturday, February 6, 2010. Students need to RSVP in Dr. Torrance's class. The 1/9 workshop will be held from 9-12:30 in ED 140 and the 2/6 workshop will be in Connely Arts 101 from 9-12:30. See your counselor with any questions!

 

UCSF Fresno Summer Biomedical Internship Program The UCSF Fresno Biomedical Research program is designated for JUNIORS interested in participating in a summer internship that will allow you to participate in basic and clinical research in fields such as surgery reconstruction, radiology, basic bench science, and epidemiology. Qualified students must submit an application (which are available online at: http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/application.html),a one-page typed questionnaire, a letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a copy of your PSAT or SAT scores. Applications are due Friday, January 29th.

 

NIDDK Step-Up Program The Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in Bethesda, MD would like your help in identifying and recruiting outstanding underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students from your school to participate in our STEP-UP program. The purpose of the NIDDK STEP-UP Program is to expose students to research in the following NIDDK mission areas: diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, and digestive, liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic diseases. To accomplish this goal, the NIDDK STEP-UP program provides research education grants to universities to support summer research experiences for eligible high school students throughout the United States.

Student participants will benefit from the following:

The opportunity to participate in a research project, designed by a skilled mentors, that is intended to enhance the students' research capabilities as well as their knowledge and skills in their particular area of scientific interest.

The opportunity to work full time (40 hours per week) conducting an individualized project in a research lab within close proximity to their home for 8-10 consecutive weeks during the summer.

The chance to visit the world renowned campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (all travel expenses provided) for the Annual STEP-UP High School Scientific Session and Summer Research Presentations where students are given the opportunity to present their research to an audience of their peers, mentors, and scientific experts.

UC Davis Young Scholars Program The UC Davis Young Scholars Program is a summer residential research program designed to expose 40, high achieving high school sophomores and juniors to the world of original research in the natural sciences with emphases on the biological, environmental and agricultural sciences. Participants in the 2010 UCD-YSP will work one-on-one with research faculty and research groups in state of the art laboratories for six weeks. Each student will work on an individual project and prepare a journal quality paper and symposium presentation about their work. In addition to scientific research, the UCD-YSP strives to introduce participants to the climate and culture of living and working on a university campus. Experience Berkeley Application This year's application for Experience Berkeley are available www.stileshall.org Black, Latino & Native American juniors with a 3.5 or higher GPA (class of 2011) get a close, personal look at UC Berkeley

The program identifies promising high school and community college students and brings them to the Berkeley campus in small groups during the summer and school year. At UC Berkeley they are introduced to college life, taken to classes, given admissions feedback on personal statements, financial aid information, and mentoring throughout the application process.

Many current UC Berkeley students said this was a defining experience in their college application and ultimate selection process.

North Fresno Lions Club hosts speech competition
Are you interested in public speaking? Are you concerned with the conversation surrounding healthcare reform? Do you want to make connections in the community? Are you interested in scholarship money?
The North Fresno Lions Club has invited UHS to represent them in area and regional speech competitions. Come talk to Ms. Bergen for more details. All you have to do is write and deliver your own original speech! Four students from UHS will participate and each one will receive cash prizes at the first round of competition with further opportunities for prizes and scholarship money. Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition offers 120 students college scholarships of up to $50,000 and the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Scholarship Opportunities from the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation Are you the child of a vineyard employee or the child of a wine grape grower OR are you interested in studying viticulture/enology? If your family owns a vineyard or is a vineyard employee, you may be eligible for one of 6 scholarships offered to graduating seniors by the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation. At least two scholarships offered provide $1,000 per year for four years at any UC or CSU campus and at least four scholarships offered provide $500 a year for two years at any California community college. Students may study the subject of their choice. For students interested in studying viticulture and/or enology, the Foundation is offering the Robert Miller Scholarship. Cabrillo Clubs of California Scholarships - Seniors The Cabrillo Clubs of California are offering $500.00 scholarships to high school seniors of Portuguese heritage. Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) 2010 The Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award is open to graduating high school senior scholar athletes. SAMMY winners receive a scholarship of $7,500, an awards weekend at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and the opportunity to be pictured in USA TODAY and other national publications, awarded to each of the 25 regional winners.

California Table Grape Workers Scholarship The California Table Grape Commission is accepting applications for scholarship funds offered by the state's fresh grape farmers. Three $16,000 scholarships are available to 2010 graduating seniors or high school graduates who plan to attend a four-year college or university in California.

Parent volunteers needed to serve on UHS Committee
Dear Parents,
Dr. Bushman has requested help from parents with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Accreditation process.

We are looking for 25 parent volunteers from 1-4 pm on March 10th to participate in discussions and work with teachers and student in evaluating UHS programs.

We would prefer parents of students in grades 9-11 as we will ask these same parents to participate in a follow-up meeting next February when we are visited by the WASC team.

Geology Books
Geology (EES1) textbooks for the spring semester can be picked up from Mrs. Royce. I will announce when the lab packets arrive from the Copy Center. Lab packets will be needed before lab next week.

 

 

Attention Parents: AP Fees Due Date is Approaching AP order forms will be distributed to students tomorrow. Students need to submit these forms to the main office by Friday, February 5th. Fees will be collected in the main office during the week of February 15th. Finaly payments must be submitted by Friday, February 19th. Each exam is $86 and students are required to take the exam for each AP Course they are enrolled in, unless they choose to have the AP designation and grade augmentation removed from their transcript. Students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" will receive a discount of $30 per exam, bringing the total cost of each exam to $56. Checks may be made payable to "UHS."

No more individual teacher baskets!
We are collecting for class packages *weekend getaways, limousine service, game tickets, etc. to sell in our live auction at the Rome Wasn't Built in a Day! event on March 12.
Donate now to pool funds that will be used to create freshman class, sophomore class, junior class, and senior class "baskets."
Every student is asked to donate $5.00, or whatever he/she can afford, to his/her class.
The funds generated by these baskets in the live auction will support Phoenix Alliance to help fund the equipment and furniture that will make our new building a first class high school educational facility.

FREE SAT Math Workshop for Juniors
Kaplan will be hosting a free SAT math workshop for our students on Saturday, January 9, 2010 and Saturday, February 6, 2010. Students need to RSVP in Dr. Torrance's class. UCSF Fresno Summer Biomedical Internship Program The UCSF Fresno Biomedical Research program is designated for JUNIORS interested in participating in a summer internship that will allow you to participate in basic and clinical research in fields such as surgery reconstruction, radiology, basic bench science, and epidemiology. Qualified students must submit an application (which are available online at: http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/application.html),a one-page typed questionnaire, a letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a copy of your PSAT or SAT scores. NIDDK Step-Up Program The Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in Bethesda, MD would like your help in identifying and recruiting outstanding underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students from your school to participate in our STEP-UP program. The purpose of the NIDDK STEP-UP Program is to expose students to research in the following NIDDK mission areas: diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, and digestive, liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic diseases. To accomplish this goal, the NIDDK STEP-UP program provides research education grants to universities to support summer research experiences for eligible high school students throughout the United States.

Student participants will benefit from the following:

The opportunity to participate in a research project, designed by a skilled mentors, that is intended to enhance the students' research capabilities as well as their knowledge and skills in their particular area of scientific interest.

The opportunity to work full time (40 hours per week) conducting an individualized project in a research lab within close proximity to their home for 8-10 consecutive weeks during the summer.

UC Davis Young Scholars Program The UC Davis Young Scholars Program is a summer residential research program designed to expose 40, high achieving high school sophomores and juniors to the world of original research in the natural sciences with emphases on the biological, environmental and agricultural sciences. Participants in the 2010 UCD-YSP will work one-on-one with research faculty and research groups in state of the art laboratories for six weeks. Each student will work on an individual project and prepare a journal quality paper and symposium presentation about their work. In addition to scientific research, the UCD-YSP strives to introduce participants to the climate and culture of living and working on a university campus. Experience Berkeley Application This year's application for Experience Berkeley are available www.stileshall.org Black, Latino & Native American juniors with a 3.5 or higher GPA (class of 2011) get a close, personal look at UC Berkeley

The program identifies promising high school and community college students and brings them to the Berkeley campus in small groups during the summer and school year. At UC Berkeley they are introduced to college life, taken to classes, given admissions feedback on personal statements, financial aid information, and mentoring throughout the application process.

Many current UC Berkeley students said this was a defining experience in their college application and ultimate selection process.

North Fresno Lions Club hosts speech competition
Are you interested in public speaking? Are you concerned with the conversation surrounding healthcare reform? Do you want to make connections in the community? Are you interested in scholarship money?
The North Fresno Lions Club has invited UHS to represent them in area and regional speech competitions. Come talk to Ms. Bergen for more details. All you have to do is write and deliver your own original speech! Four students from UHS will participate and each one will receive cash prizes at the first round of competition with further opportunities for prizes and scholarship money. Scholarship Opportunities from the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation Are you the child of a vineyard employee or the child of a wine grape grower OR are you interested in studying viticulture/enology? If your family owns a vineyard or is a vineyard employee, you may be eligible for one of 6 scholarships offered to graduating seniors by the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation. Plans are fully underway for a fun evening that will include dinner, student entertainment, a silent auction, a desert auction, a live auction and raffle prizes.
Save a few tax deductible dollars to help us raise funds to "Furnish the Forum" by helping to purchase brand new classroom furniture, technology needed for a beyond-modern classroom, and other permanent equipment for the new building that is rapidly rising across from the Kremen Education Building.

No more individual teacher baskets!
We are collecting for class packages *weekend getaways, limousine service, game tickets, etc. to sell in our live auction at the Rome Wasn't Built in a Day! event on March 12.
Donate now to pool funds that will be used to create freshman class, sophomore class, junior class, and senior class "baskets."
Every student is asked to donate $5.00, or whatever he/she can afford, to his/her class.
The funds generated by these baskets in the live auction will support Phoenix Alliance to help fund the equipment and furniture that will make our new building a first class high school educational facility.

Contributions will be collected each day in period 2 for the week of January 25-29.

FREE SAT Math Workshop for Juniors
Kaplan will be hosting a free SAT math workshop for our students on Saturday, January 9, 2010 and Saturday, February 6, 2010. Students need to RSVP in Dr. Torrance's class. The 1/9 workshop will be held from 9-12:30 in ED 140 and the 2/6 workshop will be in Connely Arts 101 from 9-12:30. See your counselor with any questions!

 

UCSF Fresno Summer Biomedical Internship Program The UCSF Fresno Biomedical Research program is designated for JUNIORS interested in participating in a summer internship that will allow you to participate in basic and clinical research in fields such as surgery reconstruction, radiology, basic bench science, and epidemiology. Qualified students must submit an application (which are available online at: http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/application.html),a one-page typed questionnaire, a letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a copy of your PSAT or SAT scores. Applications are due Friday, January 29th.

 

NIDDK Step-Up Program The Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in Bethesda, MD would like your help in identifying and recruiting outstanding underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students from your school to participate in our STEP-UP program. The purpose of the NIDDK STEP-UP Program is to expose students to research in the following NIDDK mission areas: diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, and digestive, liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic diseases. To accomplish this goal, the NIDDK STEP-UP program provides research education grants to universities to support summer research experiences for eligible high school students throughout the United States.

Student participants will benefit from the following:

The opportunity to participate in a research project, designed by a skilled mentors, that is intended to enhance the students' research capabilities as well as their knowledge and skills in their particular area of scientific interest.

The opportunity to work full time (40 hours per week) conducting an individualized project in a research lab within close proximity to their home for 8-10 consecutive weeks during the summer.

The chance to visit the world renowned campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (all travel expenses provided) for the Annual STEP-UP High School Scientific Session and Summer Research Presentations where students are given the opportunity to present their research to an audience of their peers, mentors, and scientific experts.

UC Davis Young Scholars Program The UC Davis Young Scholars Program is a summer residential research program designed to expose 40, high achieving high school sophomores and juniors to the world of original research in the natural sciences with emphases on the biological, environmental and agricultural sciences. Participants in the 2010 UCD-YSP will work one-on-one with research faculty and research groups in state of the art laboratories for six weeks. Each student will work on an individual project and prepare a journal quality paper and symposium presentation about their work. In addition to scientific research, the UCD-YSP strives to introduce participants to the climate and culture of living and working on a university campus. Experience Berkeley Application This year's application for Experience Berkeley are available www.stileshall.org Black, Latino & Native American juniors with a 3.5 or higher GPA (class of 2011) get a close, personal look at UC Berkeley

The program identifies promising high school and community college students and brings them to the Berkeley campus in small groups during the summer and school year. At UC Berkeley they are introduced to college life, taken to classes, given admissions feedback on personal statements, financial aid information, and mentoring throughout the application process.

Many current UC Berkeley students said this was a defining experience in their college application and ultimate selection process.

College Latin Tutor Christian Paulsen will be in the study hall room (Rm 13) every Monday and Tuesday from 3-4 for any student who needs extra help in Latin. Please come by to work with him if you are struggling or will struggle with Latin.

 

North Fresno Lions Club hosts speech competition
Are you interested in public speaking? Are you concerned with the conversation surrounding healthcare reform? Do you want to make connections in the community? Are you interested in scholarship money?
The North Fresno Lions Club has invited UHS to represent them in area and regional speech competitions. Come talk to Ms. Bergen for more details. All you have to do is write and deliver your own original speech! Four students from UHS will participate and each one will receive cash prizes at the first round of competition with further opportunities for prizes and scholarship money. ACT Poster Concept Contest The ACT is announcing a contest to encourage students to tap into their creativity and qualify for a scholarship of up to $5,000! CAC Announces 2009-2010 Scholarships! The California Association of Collectors has announced a scholarship for California high school seniors for use at any accredited college, university, or vocational school. KFC Colonel's Scholars KFC Colonel's scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need to qualify for their Program. Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition offers 120 students college scholarships of up to $50,000 and the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Scholarship Opportunities from the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation Are you the child of a vineyard employee or the child of a wine grape grower OR are you interested in studying viticulture/enology? If your family owns a vineyard or is a vineyard employee, you may be eligible for one of 6 scholarships offered to graduating seniors by the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation. At least two scholarships offered provide $1,000 per year for four years at any UC or CSU campus and at least four scholarships offered provide $500 a year for two years at any California community college. Students may study the subject of their choice. For students interested in studying viticulture and/or enology, the Foundation is offering the Robert Miller Scholarship. Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) 2010 The Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award is open to graduating high school senior scholar athletes. Elections for the V.P. spot will take place in your English classes on Friday, January 29th.
Speeches to get to know your candidates will take place in the amphitheater at lunch on Thursday, January 28th.
Campaigning will begin on Wednesday January 20th.
Campaigning must be clean, positive, and low-key with no stickers, no bribes, low-budget and good vibes.

Creative Writing Club Announcements Creative Writing is starting back up, beginning next Wednesday, the 27th, still in Dr. Torrance's room (10). Attention Parents: AP Fees Due Date is Approaching AP order forms will be distributed to students tomorrow. Students need to submit these forms to the main office by Friday, February 5th. Fees will be collected in the main office during the week of February 15th. Finaly payments must be submitted by Friday, February 19th. Each exam is $86 and students are required to take the exam for each AP Course they are enrolled in, unless they choose to have the AP designation and grade augmentation removed from their transcript. Students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" will receive a discount of $30 per exam, bringing the total cost of each exam to $56. Checks may be made payable to "UHS."

Experience Berkeley Application This year's application for Experience Berkeley are available www.stileshall.org Black, Latino & Native American juniors with a 3.5 or higher GPA (class of 2011) get a close, personal look at UC Berkeley

The program identifies promising high school and community college students and brings them to the Berkeley campus in small groups during the summer and school year. At UC Berkeley they are introduced to college life, taken to classes, given admissions feedback on personal statements, financial aid information, and mentoring throughout the application process.

Many current UC Berkeley students said this was a defining experience in their college application and ultimate selection process.

North Fresno Lions Club hosts speech competition
Are you interested in public speaking? Are you concerned with the conversation surrounding healthcare reform? Do you want to make connections in the community? Are you interested in scholarship money?
The North Fresno Lions Club has invited UHS to represent them in area and regional speech competitions. Come talk to Ms. Bergen for more details. All you have to do is write and deliver your own original speech! Four students from UHS will participate and each one will receive cash prizes at the first round of competition with further opportunities for prizes and scholarship money. The first competition is February 8th; stop by room LS169 anytime. This is open to all students.

Junior Classical League Students who intend on going to the state convention MUST have their paperwork and $25 turned-in to Mrs. Downer (Rm 9 or box in the office) no later than 3:00 on Monday. CAC Announces 2009-2010 Scholarships! The California Association of Collectors has announced a scholarship for California high school seniors for use at any accredited college, university, or vocational school. Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition offers 120 students college scholarships of up to $50,000 and the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Scholarship Opportunities from the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation Are you the child of a vineyard employee or the child of a wine grape grower OR are you interested in studying viticulture/enology? If your family owns a vineyard or is a vineyard employee, you may be eligible for one of 6 scholarships offered to graduating seniors by the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation. At least two scholarships offered provide $1,000 per year for four years at any UC or CSU campus and at least four scholarships offered provide $500 a year for two years at any California community college. Creative Writing Club Announcements Creative Writing is starting back up, beginning next Wednesday, the 27th, still in Dr. Torrance's room (10). Attention Parents: AP Fees Due Date is Approaching AP order forms will be distributed to students tomorrow. Students need to submit these forms to the main office by Friday, February 5th. Fees will be collected in the main office during the week of February 15th. Finaly payments must be submitted by Friday, February 19th. Each exam is $86 and students are required to take the exam for each AP Course they are enrolled in, unless they choose to have the AP designation and grade augmentation removed from their transcript. Students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" will receive a discount of $30 per exam, bringing the total cost of each exam to $56. Checks may be made payable to "UHS."

 

Geology Books
Geology (EES1) textbooks for the spring semester can be picked up from Mrs. Royce. I will announce when the lab packets arrive from the Copy Center. Lab packets will be needed before lab next week.

 

 

Leo Club meeting coming up soon! The Leo Club will have its first meeting of the semester on Friday, January 22, at 12:15 in Room LS 134. It is important that all members attend, for this will be a crucial planning session for the spring semester projects and we want to have as many members as possible participating. We are collecting for class packages *weekend getaways, limousine service, game tickets, etc. to sell in our live auction at the Rome Wasn't Built in a Day! event on March 12.
Donate now to pool funds that will be used to create freshman class, sophomore class, junior class, and senior class "baskets."
Every student is asked to donate $5.00, or whatever he/she can afford, to his/her class.
The funds generated by these baskets in the live auction will support Phoenix Alliance to help fund the equipment and furniture that will make our new building a first class high school educational facility.

FREE SAT Math Workshop for Juniors
Kaplan will be hosting a free SAT math workshop for our students on Saturday, January 9, 2010 and Saturday, February 6, 2010. Students need to RSVP in Dr. Torrance's class. UCSF Fresno Summer Biomedical Internship Program The UCSF Fresno Biomedical Research program is designated for JUNIORS interested in participating in a summer internship that will allow you to participate in basic and clinical research in fields such as surgery reconstruction, radiology, basic bench science, and epidemiology. Qualified students must submit an application (which are available online at: http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/application.html),a one-page typed questionnaire, a letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a copy of your PSAT or SAT scores. NIDDK Step-Up Program The Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in Bethesda, MD would like your help in identifying and recruiting outstanding underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students from your school to participate in our STEP-UP program. The purpose of the NIDDK STEP-UP Program is to expose students to research in the following NIDDK mission areas: diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, and digestive, liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic diseases. To accomplish this goal, the NIDDK STEP-UP program provides research education grants to universities to support summer research experiences for eligible high school students throughout the United States.

Student participants will benefit from the following:

The opportunity to participate in a research project, designed by a skilled mentors, that is intended to enhance the students' research capabilities as well as their knowledge and skills in their particular area of scientific interest.

The opportunity to work full time (40 hours per week) conducting an individualized project in a research lab within close proximity to their home for 8-10 consecutive weeks during the summer.

The chance to visit the world renowned campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (all travel expenses provided) for the Annual STEP-UP High School Scientific Session and Summer Research Presentations where students are given the opportunity to present their research to an audience of their peers, mentors, and scientific experts.

UC Davis Young Scholars Program The UC Davis Young Scholars Program is a summer residential research program designed to expose 40, high achieving high school sophomores and juniors to the world of original research in the natural sciences with emphases on the biological, environmental and agricultural sciences. Participants in the 2010 UCD-YSP will work one-on-one with research faculty and research groups in state of the art laboratories for six weeks. Each student will work on an individual project and prepare a journal quality paper and symposium presentation about their work. In addition to scientific research, the UCD-YSP strives to introduce participants to the climate and culture of living and working on a university campus. UHS Soccer UHS soccer tryouts will be held in a few weeks. Any males or females interested in trying out should sign up in room 18. There will be a sign-up sheet on Mr. Hagen's desk.

Scholarship Opportunities from the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation Are you the child of a vineyard employee or the child of a wine grape grower OR are you interested in studying viticulture/enology? If your family owns a vineyard or is a vineyard employee, you may be eligible for one of 6 scholarships offered to graduating seniors by the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation. Plans are fully underway for a fun evening that will include dinner, student entertainment, a silent auction, a desert auction, a live auction and raffle prizes.

We are collecting for class packages *weekend getaways, limousine service, game tickets, etc. to sell in our live auction at the Rome Wasn't Built in a Day! event on March 12.
Donate now to pool funds that will be used to create freshman class, sophomore class, junior class, and senior class "baskets."
Every student is asked to donate $5.00, or whatever he/she can afford, to his/her class.
The funds generated by these baskets in the live auction will support Phoenix Alliance to help fund the equipment and furniture that will make our new building a first class high school educational facility.

FREE SAT Math Workshop for Juniors
Kaplan will be hosting a free SAT math workshop for our students on Saturday, January 9, 2010 and Saturday, February 6, 2010. Students need to RSVP in Dr. Torrance's class. UCSF Fresno Summer Biomedical Internship Program The UCSF Fresno Biomedical Research program is designated for JUNIORS interested in participating in a summer internship that will allow you to participate in basic and clinical research in fields such as surgery reconstruction, radiology, basic bench science, and epidemiology. Qualified students must submit an application (which are available online at: http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/application.html),a one-page typed questionnaire, a letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a copy of your PSAT or SAT scores. NIDDK Step-Up Program The Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in Bethesda, MD would like your help in identifying and recruiting outstanding underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students from your school to participate in our STEP-UP program. The purpose of the NIDDK STEP-UP Program is to expose students to research in the following NIDDK mission areas: diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, and digestive, liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic diseases. To accomplish this goal, the NIDDK STEP-UP program provides research education grants to universities to support summer research experiences for eligible high school students throughout the United States.

Student participants will benefit from the following:

The opportunity to participate in a research project, designed by a skilled mentors, that is intended to enhance the students' research capabilities as well as their knowledge and skills in their particular area of scientific interest.

The opportunity to work full time (40 hours per week) conducting an individualized project in a research lab within close proximity to their home for 8-10 consecutive weeks during the summer.

The chance to visit the world renowned campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (all travel expenses provided) for the Annual STEP-UP High School Scientific Session and Summer Research Presentations where students are given the opportunity to present their research to an audience of their peers, mentors, and scientific experts.

UC Davis Young Scholars Program The UC Davis Young Scholars Program is a summer residential research program designed to expose 40, high achieving high school sophomores and juniors to the world of original research in the natural sciences with emphases on the biological, environmental and agricultural sciences. Participants in the 2010 UCD-YSP will work one-on-one with research faculty and research groups in state of the art laboratories for six weeks. Each student will work on an individual project and prepare a journal quality paper and symposium presentation about their work. In addition to scientific research, the UCD-YSP strives to introduce participants to the climate and culture of living and working on a university campus. Experience Berkeley Application This year's application for Experience Berkeley are available www.stileshall.org Black, Latino & Native American juniors with a 3.5 or higher GPA (class of 2011) get a close, personal look at UC Berkeley

The program identifies promising high school and community college students and brings them to the Berkeley campus in small groups during the summer and school year. At UC Berkeley they are introduced to college life, taken to classes, given admissions feedback on personal statements, financial aid information, and mentoring throughout the application process.

Many current UC Berkeley students said this was a defining experience in their college application and ultimate selection process.

North Fresno Lions Club hosts speech competition
Are you interested in public speaking? Are you concerned with the conversation surrounding healthcare reform? Do you want to make connections in the community? Are you interested in scholarship money?
The North Fresno Lions Club has invited UHS to represent them in area and regional speech competitions. Come talk to Ms. Bergen for more details. All you have to do is write and deliver your own original speech! Four students from UHS will participate and each one will receive cash prizes at the first round of competition with further opportunities for prizes and scholarship money. The first competition is February 8th; stop by room LS169 anytime. This is open to all students.

UHS Soccer UHS soccer tryouts will be held in a few weeks. Any males or females interested in trying out should sign up in room 18. There will be a sign-up sheet on Mr. Hagen's desk.

Help! We need Help!
No more individual teacher baskets for the Spring Fundraiser!
We are collecting for class packages *weekend getaways, limousine service, game tickets, etc. to sell in our live auction at the Rome Wasn't Built in a Day! event on March 12.
Donate now to pool funds that will be used to create freshman class, sophomore class, junior class, and senior class "baskets."
Every student is asked to donate $5.00 , or whatever he/she can afford, to his/her class.
The funds generated by these baskets in the live auction will support Phoenix Alliance to help fund the equipment and furniture that will make our new building a first class high school educational facility.

Contributions will be collected each day in period 2 for the week of January 25-29.

 

Leo Club meeting coming up soon! The Leo Club will have its first meeting of the semester on Friday, January 22, at 12:15 in Room LS 134. It is important that all members attend, for this will be a crucial planning session for the spring semester projects and we want to have as many members as possible participating. Plus, there will be a special election to fill an officer position that has recently been vacated. See you there!

Parents, save the evening of Friday, March 12 for the Phoenix Alliance (parent group) dinner and auction.
It's a toga (if you dare!) party in honor of our amazing Latin program!
We are raising funds to help provide state-of-the art equipment and classroom furniture for our new school building.
Invitations will be in the mail by early February.

How can you help? If you have donations for our silent auction (we are looking for gift certificates for spas, fine dining certificates, wines, sporting equipment, seats, and boxes, nice baskets, etc.)

FREE SAT Math Workshop for Juniors
Kaplan will be hosting a free SAT math workshop for our students on Saturday, January 9, 2010 and Saturday, February 6, 2010. Students need to RSVP in Dr. Torrance's class. The 1/9 workshop will be held from 9-12:30 in ED 140 and the 2/6 workshop will be in Connely Arts 101 from 9-12:30. See your counselor with any questions!

 

UCSF Fresno Summer Biomedical Internship Program The UCSF Fresno Biomedical Research program is designated for JUNIORS interested in participating in a summer internship that will allow you to participate in basic and clinical research in fields such as surgery reconstruction, radiology, basic bench science, and epidemiology. Qualified students must submit an application (which are available online at: http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/application.html),a one-page typed questionnaire, a letter of recommendation, a transcript, and a copy of your PSAT or SAT scores. Applications are due Friday, January 29th.

 

NIDDK Step-Up Program The Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in Bethesda, MD would like your help in identifying and recruiting outstanding underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students from your school to participate in our STEP-UP program. The purpose of the NIDDK STEP-UP Program is to expose students to research in the following NIDDK mission areas: diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, nutrition, obesity, and digestive, liver, urologic, kidney, and hematologic diseases. To accomplish this goal, the NIDDK STEP-UP program provides research education grants to universities to support summer research experiences for eligible high school students throughout the United States.

Student participants will benefit from the following:

The opportunity to participate in a research project, designed by a skilled mentors, that is intended to enhance the students' research capabilities as well as their knowledge and skills in their particular area of scientific interest.

The opportunity to work full time (40 hours per week) conducting an individualized project in a research lab within close proximity to their home for 8-10 consecutive weeks during the summer.

The chance to visit the world renowned campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (all travel expenses provided) for the Annual STEP-UP High School Scientific Session and Summer Research Presentations where students are given the opportunity to present their research to an audience of their peers, mentors, and scientific experts.

ACT Poster Concept Contest The ACT is announcing a contest to encourage students to tap into their creativity and qualify for a scholarship of up to $5,000! CAC Announces 2009-2010 Scholarships! The California Association of Collectors has announced a scholarship for California high school seniors for use at any accredited college, university, or vocational school. KFC Colonel's Scholars KFC Colonel's scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need to qualify for their Program. Awards are up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board. Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition offers 120 students college scholarships of up to $50,000 and the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. (all expenses paid) to present their research. To enter, students submit a research project that sheds light on a health problem, using the methods of analysis employed by epidemiologists. Epidemiology is the science of exploring patterns of disease, illness and injury within populations with the goal of developing methods for prevention, control and treatment to improve health outcomes. Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Their leadership and courage make them true heroesÑand inspirations to us all. Each year, the Barron Prize selects ten winners nationwide. Half of the winners have focused on helping their communities and fellow beings; half have focused on protecting the health and sustainability of the environment.The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes is available to students age 18 and younger who have organized and led a service activity that has clearly benefited other people. Your service activity must have been initiated and motivated primarily by you and cannot have been an assignment for school or work. Additionally, you must demonstrate a positive spirit and high moral purpose. The Barron Prize relies on thoughtful adults to identify and nominate children from the diverse communities in which they live. American Legion Scholarship American Legion Scholarship is a offering up to $18,000 in scholarship money for the best constitutional speech. Scholarship Opportunities from the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation Are you the child of a vineyard employee or the child of a wine grape grower OR are you interested in studying viticulture/enology? If your family owns a vineyard or is a vineyard employee, you may be eligible for one of 6 scholarships offered to graduating seniors by the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation. At least two scholarships offered provide $1,000 per year for four years at any UC or CSU campus and at least four scholarships offered provide $500 a year for two years at any California community college. Students may study the subject of their choice. For students interested in studying viticulture and/or enology, the Foundation is offering the Robert Miller Scholarship. This scholarship program is for students interested in attending Alan Hancock Community College of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. UHS Chamber Music Class Presents: Soiree

Soiree! will feature music from the Baroque era to Low Rider.

This concert may give you musical whiplash exclaims bassoonist Josh Constable.
Josh is part of an ensemble called Citizens of Quad City performing music of the same name for percussion, winds, brass and clapping.
An ensemble which calls itself: The Trio will perform a Beethoven trio for flute, violin and viola while their nemesis The Other Trio will perform a Baroque sonata for guitar, clarinet and bassoon.
For even more contrast Gums and Hoses, a mixed instrument quintet with piano, trumpet and two clarinets, will perform: The Entertainer by Scott Joplin contrasted with an arrangement of a Bach Prelude arranged for the group by visiting pianist Gabriel Mendelson.
Soiree! is a no miss.
Refreshments will be served after the presentation.
