. New Items [1-15]

AP Fees Ms. Patterson will begin collecting AP fees on Monday, March
3rd. Fees must be paid by Friday, March 14th. Each AP exam costs $84.
Checks should be made payable to "University High School." All students
who are enrolled in AP classes are required to take the corresponding AP
exam/s.

. Student Recognition [16-20]

All-State Honor Band Finalists CONGRATULATIONS to the six UHS students
who were awarded positions in the California Band Directors Association
All-State Honor Band! Natalie Erskine, Carl Gardner, Max Krongaus,
Stephanie Loomer, Matt Shaver and Andrew Vanderpardt were selected
through a competitive state-wide audition to represent UHS at the CBDA
Convention last Thursday-Sunday. These musicians rehearsed 8 eights each
day and performed in the spectacular HONOR CONCERT on Sunday afternoon
at the Saroyan Theatre.

CHOIRS CANCELLED Freshman Concert Choir, Show Choir, and Women's
Ensemble will be cancelled on Thursday, Feb. 28 and Friday, Feb. 29. Mr.
Lapp is at a music convention.

AP Fees Notice Attention Students and Parents: Ms. Patterson will begin
collecting AP fees on Monday, March 3rd. Students who qualify for free
and reduced lunch will receive a fee reduction and therefore will pay
$54 for each exam taken.

Bake Sale! Come support the class of 2010 and buy some delicious
pizookies, muffins, brownies, and more. The sophomore class bake sale
will be from Thursday the 21st to Friday the 29th at lunch between rooms

11th grade applicants wanted
University High School is seeking additional students to join our junior
class beginning in the Fall of 2008. If you meet the qualifications
listed below and would like to be considered for admission into our
nationally-recognized high school, please submit an application form
(available for download on the UHS website) by March 30th:

Completion of geometry and algebra II with grades of C or better
20 units of a high school music performance group or equivalent
experience in a community music performance group
20 high school units of foreign language
20 units of college prep sciences
15 units of physical education
10 units of world history

UCSF Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program The UCSF Fresno
Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program allows students to work
alongside a physician and/or faculty member on a current research study.
The chosen students will receive stipends and a wealth of experience
that will prepare them for a rewarding career in health sciences.
Application are due by March 7th at 5:00 p.m. Only five juniors will be
selected to participate in this program. For a copy of the application,

COSMOS Summer Program
California Summer School for Math and Science (COSMOS) is a summer
enrichment program for 8-12th grade students with a strong interest in
math, science, or engineering. The summer sessions are held at UC
Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, or UC San Diego (depending on the
session you participate in).
Applications are available online at http://www.ucop.edu/cosmos and are
due postmarked by March 15.

Science Olympiad Competition Our two Science Olympiad teams will be
competing this Saturday against area schools in the CSUF South Gym.
Events run from 9am -3pm, with some events open to public viewing. The
awards assembly is begins about 3:30 in the gym. Come join the UHS
rooting squad and cheer on our teams.

Science Olympiad All-Team Meeting
Final prep session (Mandatory for all team members) is this Friday,
3:30-7:00pm. Bring ALL materials for competition. Check your list and be
sure everything is there. Pizza will be provided plus the other goodies
you signed up to bring.
Competition: meet in Rm15 at 7:00am Saturday. Registration begins in the
gym at 7:30; signup for events at 7:45am.

JCL Students going to the Junior Classical League State Convention!!!
There is a mandatory meeting Friday at 12:15 in the Latin I classroom.
Students need to sign-up for rooms and competitions-Don't be late!!

Softball UHS softball lost both games last night at the Edison softball
tournament. We played Hanford and Atwater. The scores were 9-4 and 6-3.
Angela Beevers pitched two great games. The girls represented UHS very
well. Great job! We have two more games in the tournament on Saturday.

National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine The National Youth
Leadership Forum on Medicine is a 10-day summer program dedicated to
early recognition and preparation of the world's most promising future
physicians. The Leadership Forum is open to all students 9th * 12th
grade with a minimum of a 3.7 GPA. If interested in the program or
becoming nominated, please feel free in contacting Mr. Rodriguez in room

Fresno City College Scholarship Opportunities

Are you planning to attend FCC next year? If so, apply for scholarships
now by visiting: www.fresnocitycollege.edu and then clicking on
"Scholarship Opportunities." The deadline is March 3, 2008.

Association of California School Administrators Scholarship The Fresno
County Charter of the California Association of School Administrators
will award $250 to qualifying high school seniors who are the children,
or under the legal guardianship of Fresno County Charter ACSA members.
For an application, see Ms. Patterson ASAP. The scholarship deadline is
March 28th.

Civil Service Employees Insurance Company Scholarship

To promote driver safety and awareness among young people, Civil Service
Employees Insurance Company will award up to two $1000 and eight $500
scholarships, one each to a child of a full-time public employee, based
on an essay discussing ways the teenage accident rate can be reduced.
Applications can be picked up from Ms. Patterson.

Save Me a Spot in College Scholarship Contest Students must answer the
question: "Why should California leaders save me and my peers a spot in
college?". Students may submit a written word, poster, or a TV ad entry
by March 15th. More than $100,000 in scholarships will be awarded to
over 200 students statewide.

Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California Scholarship The Cabrillo Civic Club
of California offers scholarships to seniors of Portuguese descent. For
an application, please visit: www.cabrillocivicclubs.org

Cal Grant GPA Verification Forms

Students who wish to apply for Cal Grants, must complete the FAFSA and
complete the GPA Verification Form by March 2nd. Since University High
School DOES NOT have the ability to automatically submit these forms for
you electronically, you will need to print a "hard copy" from the
following website: http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?id=1177 and bring it
to Ms. Patterson to sign by March 2nd.

American Chemical Society Scholarship

The American Chemical Society Scholars Program will award 100
scholarships to African-American, Hispanic, and Native-American
undergraduate students interested in pursuing four-year degrees in the

Fresno Community Concert Band Scholarship The Fresno Community Concert
Band is pleased to announce its Second Annual Music Scholarship. The
scholarship, in the amount of $1000, is given to one deserving woodwind,
brass or percussion player each year. See Ms. Patterson for an
application before April 15th.

Sunnyside Property Owners Assoc. Scholarship

The Sunnyside Property Association will offer two $1000 scholarships to
students that have demonstrated academic excellence, performed a
significant amount of community service or volunteer work and have
resided within the SPOA membership boundaries (Kings Canyon, Temperance,
Jensen, and Peach Avenues) for the junior and senior year regardless of
high school attended. See Ms. Patterson for an application by April 1, 2008.

CVFLA Scholarship The Central Valley Foreign Language Association offers
six scholarships every year. Five winners receive $500 each. The sixth
scholarship winner is designated the Hazel Tucker scholarship and
receives $1000. The application for thid acholarship must be accompanied
by a letter of recommendation from a foreign language teacher who is a
2008 member of CVFLA. (Mrs. Downer is a member of this organization).
See Ms. Patterson for an application, before the April 4th deadline.

CASCWA Scholarship CASCWA will be awarding 8 $750 scholarships to pupils
who have made a turn-around in their lives. The kind of pupil that will
be recognized is someone who has had to overcome lack of success early
on due to a variety of reasons, including but not limited to family
problems. For example, the family situation may have involved substance
abuse or child abuse or the family may have experienced a tragic loss.
If you'd like to apply, see Ms. Patterson for a scholarship by April 4th.

Volleyball Team Update Both teams battled tonight. Our season is coming
to a close with only two more Wednesdays to go. Logan Hamilton had 5 key
blocks tonight! Team 2 had most of their players and showed great
progress tonight. Team 1 won one of their games tonight despite being
short some players. Come out and cheer on the volleyball teams as their
season comes to a close Wednesday, March 12.

Wednesday, February 27th to give the placement test to any students who
wish to take classes at Fresno City College. UHS sophomores and juniors

on attending Fresno City College next year. The test will be given in

six scholarships every year. Five winners receive $500 each. The sixth
scholarship winner is designated the Hazel Tucker scholarship and
receives $1000. The application for thid acholarship must be accompanied
by a letter of recommendation from a foreign language teacher who is a
2008 member of CVFLA. (Mrs. Downer is a member of this organization).

Volleyball Team Games were difficult tonight with both teams not feeling 100% because of
the flu that has been going around. When Team 1 focuses on teamwork and good
communication, they are on fire. Bahar and Shelbi had some great placement serves. On team
2, Patricia was a consistent server with support in the front row from Logan and in the
backrow from Jarina. Both teams are continuing to improve as the weeks progress! Great job

Fresno City College Assessment Center on Campus A representative from the Fresno City

Congrats UHS Academic Decathlon Team!!!!

Congratulations to the University High School Academic Decathlon team. The team finished a
strong 2nd out of 24 schools, and is in the running for a qualifying spot for the state
championship. In addition, Kevin Chen beat out over 300 students to win the top scorer in
the county, and $2,500! The entire team took home a total of $4,500. Mr. Canfield and the
UHS team would like to extend their gratitude to the fantastic support the UHS student body
showed at both the Super Quiz and the awards ceremony. They easily beat out all of the

The California State Summer School for the Arts (Innerspark) is seeking the most talented

FAFSA Workshop for the Parents of Seniors - One Student in attendance will win a

University High School will be hosting a FAFSA workshop on February 6th at 6:00 p.m.
(location to be determined). During the workshop, students and/or parents can also fill out
the FAFSA online for the 2008-2009 academic year. If students and/or parents intend to
complete the FAFSA on the Web during the workshop they must register for a PIN at
