National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine
Interested in pursuing a career in Medicine? If so, consider attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this summer!

The program is dedicated to the early recognition and preparation of our nation's most promising future physicians. Students will have the opportunity to interact with some of the nation's most distinguished physicians in their choice of 8 major U.S. cities (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, or Washington D.C.)!

This intensive 10-day program is tuition based, however, partial and full scholarship opportunities are available for students based on financial need, scholastic merit, leadership achievements and other factors.

In addition, NYLF makes every effort to assist students with gathering funds for part or all of their tuition by preparing a special Fundraising Guide to help you raise the necessary funds within your community.

New York University Abu Dhabi-The Opporunity of a Lifetime!!
NYU Abu Dhabi, opening its doors in the Fall of 2010, is a highly selective college of liberal arts and science located in the city of Abu Dhabi, the capital of both the Emirates of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It will be the first such campus operated by an American university outside the United States.

Students will not only live and learn in this cosmopolitan city, but will also have the opportunity to study abroad for at least one semeter at NYU academic centers around the world or at the other NYU anchor campus in New York City.

NYU Abu Dhabi seeks students from every part of the world and from all backgrounds. They are looking for students who will fit comfortably at the very top of the world's talent pool-tomorrow's heads of state, Nobel laureates, Tony Award winners, and business leaders.

These efforts will be undertaken to identify prospective students with top qualifications from around the world. Students selected for admission to NYU Abu Dhabi will be chosen based on solid academic preparation, outstanding academic achievement in a rigorous curriculum, and exceptional promise.

AP Fees The main office will begin collecting AP fees on Tuesday, February 17th. Each exam is $86 and checks should be made payable to "University High School." However, for those students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" the College Board sets the policy for their fee reduction of $30 making the new cost of the test $56. The last day to pay is Friday, February 27th. Please note that REFUNDS WILL NOT BE GIVEN FOR EXAMS THAT ARE ORDERED AND NOT TAKEN.



SCHOLARSHIP SENIORS Scholarship Opportunity
To promote driver safety and awareness among young people, Civil Service Employees Insurance Company (CSE) will award up to two $1,000 and eight $500 scholarships. Selections to a child of a full-time public employee, based on an essay discussing ways the teenage automobile accident rate can be reduced. ELIGIBILITY 1) Applicant must be a California, Arizona, Nevada, or Utah resident attending his or her senior year of high school. 2) Applicant must have a cumulative of at least 3.0 GPA. 3) Applicant must have been accepted to an accredited two or four year college or university, or trade school in the United States with intent to enroll as a full-time freshmen by the Fall 2009 session. 4) The applicant's parent or legal guardian must be currently employed full time or retired or deceased, by a government entity. Definition of public employee includes, but is not limited to, peace officers; firefighters; educators; postal employees; military personnel; and federal, state and local government workers. 5) CSE employees, employees' relatives, and its agents and vendors are not eligible. SUMMER OPORTUNITY JUNIORS Economics For Leaders (EFL)
Students who are currently Juniors in high school and will complete their Junior year by this summer are eligible to attend an (EFL) program in 2009. Economics For Leaders (EFL) represents a unique experience that brings together high school students selected for their leadership potential. The one-week program introduces young leaders to economic concepts and ties these ideas to the practice of leadership.
They are offering 11 seminars on college campuses this summer. Lodging, meals, and materials are paid. Students who are accepted into the program will be financially responsible for transportation to and from the program site, incidental spending money, and a site-specific program fee. Cookies and water are needed for Open House on March 3rd.

Spring Fundraiser Themed Baskets.
This year we will again ask teachers of each 2nd period classroom to enlist the students with the donation of items for our silent auction.
We are asking for one parent volunteer of each classroom to monitor and collect the items. Spring Fundraiser committee members will take care of the wrapping.
Raffle tickets will be sold on March 3rd at Open House.

SAMMY 2009 Scholarship
America's Milk Processors and USA TODAY are pleased to bring you the 12th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) 2009 Award Program.

This scholarship recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the U.S.

25 selected winners will receive a $7,500 scholarship and a trip to Disney World Florida, along with a milk mustache ad.

Nominees are judged on five criteria: academic performance (35%), athletic experience (35%), leadership (15%), community service (10%) and milk experience (5%).

The Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship
Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place.
CRITERIA: The young person's actions must be described in detail and should document efforts that are above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age. Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last 12 months. The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member. Winners are selected based on the project chosen, the benefits of the project and the actual outcome of the project. WINNERS/AWARDS: Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6-12 and 13-18) More than 2,000 store level winners are expected to receive a $50 Kohl's Gift Card. More than 190 regional winners are expected to be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education. Ten national winners will receive $5,000 scholarships and Kohl's will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on thier behalf.

CASCWA Scholarship
The San Joaquin Section of the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare & Attendance (CASCWA) is awarding eight scholarships to high school seniors!

This award is not necessarily for those who have maintained a 4.0+ gpa, but rather, for those who improved throughout their high school career. They're looking for students who may have had to overcome obstacles and adversity in their lives, including but not limited to personal or family problems.

Students working against the odds to improve themselves are encouraged to apply!

California Table Grape Workers Scholarship
The California Table Grape Commission is accepting applications for scholarship funds offered by the state's fresh grape farmers

Three $16,000 scholarships are available to 2009 graduating seniors or high school graduates who plan to attend a four-year college or university in California.

To be eligible, your parents/caretakers must be table grape field workers or you must be a worker yourself.

The deadline for submitting applications is March 20, 2009.

Central Valley Foreign Language Association Scholarship
The Central Valley Foreign Language Association offers six scholarships to seniors who meet the following qualifications:
1) Have completed three semesters of foreign language
2) Has at least a 3.0 GPA
3) Plans to enroll as a full-time student at an accredited college or university
4) Must receive a letter of rec. from a foreign language instructor who is a current CVFLA member.

The Fresno County Cabrillo Civic Club #10 Scholarship
Criteria:
(1) Must be of Portuguese descent on father's or mother's side, be a USA citizen or permanent resident.
(2) 3.5 GPA or better and be a graduating senior of a California High School.
(3) Provide transcripts of grades from your school
(4) Three letters of recommendation
(5) Participated in at least 3 extra-curricular activities while in high school.
(6) Meet all requirements set down by an accredited university or college of the student's choice.

SAMMY 2009 Scholarship
America's Milk Processors and USA TODAY are pleased to bring you the 12th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) 2009 Award Program.

This scholarship recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the U.S.

25 selected winners will receive a $7,500 scholarship and a trip to Disney World Florida, along with a milk mustache ad.

The Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship
Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place.
CRITERIA: The young person's actions must be described in detail and should document efforts that are above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age. Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last 12 months. The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member. Winners are selected based on the project chosen, the benefits of the project and the actual outcome of the project. WINNERS/AWARDS: Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6-12 and 13-18) More than 2,000 store level winners are expected to receive a $50 Kohl's Gift Card. More than 190 regional winners are expected to be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education. Ten national winners will receive $5,000 scholarships and Kohl's will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on thier behalf.

CASCWA Scholarship
The San Joaquin Section of the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare & Attendance (CASCWA) is awarding eight scholarships to high school seniors!

This award is not necessarily for those who have maintained a 4.0+ gpa, but rather, for those who improved throughout their high school career. They're looking for students who may have had to overcome obstacles and adversity in their lives, including but not limited to personal or family problems.

California Table Grape Workers Scholarship
The California Table Grape Commission is accepting applications for scholarship funds offered by the state's fresh grape farmers

Three $16,000 scholarships are available to 2009 graduating seniors or high school graduates who plan to attend a four-year college or university in California.

To be eligible, your parents/caretakers must be table grape field workers or you must be a worker yourself.

The Central Valley Foreign Language Association offers six scholarships to seniors who meet the following qualifications:

National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine
Interested in pursuing a career in Medicine? If so, consider attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this summer!

The program is dedicated to the early recognition and preparation of our nation's most promising future physicians. Students will have the opportunity to interact with some of the nation's most distinguished physicians in their choice of 8 major U.S. cities (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, or Washington D.C.)!

This intensive 10-day program is tuition based, however, partial and full scholarship opportunities are available for students based on financial need, scholastic merit, leadership achievements and other factors.

In addition, NYLF makes every effort to assist students with gathering funds for part or all of their tuition by preparing a special Fundraising Guide to help you raise the necessary funds within your community.

New York University Abu Dhabi-The Opporunity of a Lifetime!!

AP Fees The main office will begin collecting AP fees on Tuesday, February 17th. Each exam is $86 and checks should be made payable to "University High School." However, for those students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" the College Board sets the policy for their fee reduction of $30 making the new cost of the test $56. EAP Administration for Juniors - Scheduled for March 4th
Dr. Torrance will be administering CSU's Early Assessment of Readiness for College English portion of the EAP in class on Wednesday, March 4th. It is very important that all juniors are in class on March 4th to take this exam. If you have any questions about this exam, please call Ms. Patterson at: 278-1115.



Senior Class Meeting
Seniors will have a class meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 25. It will be in room 18 at 12:20. We will discuss the class gift, and some other incidental items. It will be a short meeting (10 min. or less.)



Calling all Artists The Firebird, our very own UHS newspaper, is looking for submissions of original art work and/or comics. These can be art in any medium. Comics can be single paneled or multiple paneled. We need to add an entertainment section that will attract a variety of readers. Spring Fundraiser Themed Baskets.
This year we will again ask teachers of each 2nd period classroom to enlist the students with the donation of items for our silent auction.
We are asking for one parent volunteer of each classroom to monitor and collect the items. Spring Fundraiser committee members will take care of the wrapping.
Raffle tickets will be sold on March 3rd at Open House.

SAMMY 2009 Scholarship
America's Milk Processors and USA TODAY are pleased to bring you the 12th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) 2009 Award Program.

This scholarship recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the U.S.

25 selected winners will receive a $7,500 scholarship and a trip to Disney World Florida, along with a milk mustache ad.

Nominees are judged on five criteria: academic performance (35%), athletic experience (35%), leadership (15%), community service (10%) and milk experience (5%).

The Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship
Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place.
CRITERIA: The young person's actions must be described in detail and should document efforts that are above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age. Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last 12 months. The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member. Winners are selected based on the project chosen, the benefits of the project and the actual outcome of the project. WINNERS/AWARDS: Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6-12 and 13-18) More than 2,000 store level winners are expected to receive a $50 Kohl's Gift Card. More than 190 regional winners are expected to be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education. Ten national winners will receive $5,000 scholarships and Kohl's will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on thier behalf.

CASCWA Scholarship
The San Joaquin Section of the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare & Attendance (CASCWA) is awarding eight scholarships to high school seniors!

This award is not necessarily for those who have maintained a 4.0+ gpa, but rather, for those who improved throughout their high school career. They're looking for students who may have had to overcome obstacles and adversity in their lives, including but not limited to personal or family problems.

California Table Grape Workers Scholarship
The California Table Grape Commission is accepting applications for scholarship funds offered by the state's fresh grape farmers

Three $16,000 scholarships are available to 2009 graduating seniors or high school graduates who plan to attend a four-year college or university in California.

To be eligible, your parents/caretakers must be table grape field workers or you must be a worker yourself.

Central Valley Foreign Language Association Scholarship
The Central Valley Foreign Language Association offers six scholarships to seniors who meet the following qualifications:
1) Have completed three semesters of foreign language
2) Has at least a 3.0 GPA

4) Must receive a letter of rec. from a foreign language instructor who is a current CVFLA member.

(1) Must be of Portuguese descent on father's or mother's side, be a USA citizen or permanent resident.

National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine
Interested in pursuing a career in Medicine? If so, consider attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this summer!

The program is dedicated to the early recognition and preparation of our nation's most promising future physicians. Students will have the opportunity to interact with some of the nation's most distinguished physicians in their choice of 8 major U.S. cities (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, or Washington D.C.)!

This intensive 10-day program is tuition based, however, partial and full scholarship opportunities are available for students based on financial need, scholastic merit, leadership achievements and other factors.

In addition, NYLF makes every effort to assist students with gathering funds for part or all of their tuition by preparing a special Fundraising Guide to help you raise the necessary funds within your community.

New York University Abu Dhabi-The Opporunity of a Lifetime!!

AP Fees The main office will begin collecting AP fees on Tuesday, February 17th. Each exam is $86 and checks should be made payable to "University High School." However, for those students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" the College Board sets the policy for their fee reduction of $30 making the new cost of the test $56. The last day to pay is Friday, February 27th. Please note that REFUNDS WILL NOT BE GIVEN FOR EXAMS THAT ARE ORDERED AND NOT TAKEN.

SAMMY 2009 Scholarship
America's Milk Processors and USA TODAY are pleased to bring you the 12th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) 2009 Award Program.

This scholarship recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the U.S.

25 selected winners will receive a $7,500 scholarship and a trip to Disney World Florida, along with a milk mustache ad.

Nominees are judged on five criteria: academic performance (35%), athletic experience (35%), leadership (15%), community service (10%) and milk experience (5%).

The Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship
Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place.
CRITERIA: The young person's actions must be described in detail and should document efforts that are above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age. Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last 12 months. The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member. Winners are selected based on the project chosen, the benefits of the project and the actual outcome of the project. WINNERS/AWARDS: Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6-12 and 13-18) More than 2,000 store level winners are expected to receive a $50 Kohl's Gift Card. More than 190 regional winners are expected to be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education. Ten national winners will receive $5,000 scholarships and Kohl's will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on thier behalf.

CASCWA Scholarship
The San Joaquin Section of the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare & Attendance (CASCWA) is awarding eight scholarships to high school seniors!

This award is not necessarily for those who have maintained a 4.0+ gpa, but rather, for those who improved throughout their high school career. They're looking for students who may have had to overcome obstacles and adversity in their lives, including but not limited to personal or family problems.

The Central Valley Foreign Language Association offers six scholarships to seniors who meet the following qualifications:

National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine
Interested in pursuing a career in Medicine? If so, consider attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this summer!

The program is dedicated to the early recognition and preparation of our nation's most promising future physicians. Students will have the opportunity to interact with some of the nation's most distinguished physicians in their choice of 8 major U.S. cities (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, or Washington D.C.)!

This intensive 10-day program is tuition based, however, partial and full scholarship opportunities are available for students based on financial need, scholastic merit, leadership achievements and other factors.

In addition, NYLF makes every effort to assist students with gathering funds for part or all of their tuition by preparing a special Fundraising Guide to help you raise the necessary funds within your community.

New York University Abu Dhabi-The Opporunity of a Lifetime!!

AP Fees The main office will begin collecting AP fees on Tuesday, February 17th. Each exam is $86 and checks should be made payable to "University High School." However, for those students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" the College Board sets the policy for their fee reduction of $30 making the new cost of the test $56. The last day to pay is Friday, February 27th. Please note that REFUNDS WILL NOT BE GIVEN FOR EXAMS THAT ARE ORDERED AND NOT TAKEN.

The Central Valley Foreign Language Association offers six scholarships to seniors who meet the following qualifications:

National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine
Interested in pursuing a career in Medicine? If so, consider attending the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this summer!

The program is dedicated to the early recognition and preparation of our nation's most promising future physicians. Students will have the opportunity to interact with some of the nation's most distinguished physicians in their choice of 8 major U.S. cities (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, or Washington D.C.)!

This intensive 10-day program is tuition based, however, partial and full scholarship opportunities are available for students based on financial need, scholastic merit, leadership achievements and other factors.

In addition, NYLF makes every effort to assist students with gathering funds for part or all of their tuition by preparing a special Fundraising Guide to help you raise the necessary funds within your community.

New York University Abu Dhabi-The Opporunity of a Lifetime!!

AP Fees The main office will begin collecting AP fees on Tuesday, February 17th. Each exam is $86 and checks should be made payable to "University High School." However, for those students who qualify for "free and reduced lunch" the College Board sets the policy for their fee reduction of $30 making the new cost of the test $56. The last day to pay is Friday, February 27th. Please note that REFUNDS WILL NOT BE GIVEN FOR EXAMS THAT ARE ORDERED AND NOT TAKEN.

SUMMER OPORTUNITY JUNIORS Economics For Leaders (EFL)
Students who are currently Juniors in high school and will complete their Junior year by this summer are eligible to attend an (EFL) program in 2009. Economics For Leaders (EFL) represents a unique experience that brings together high school students selected for their leadership potential. SAMMY 2009 Scholarship
America's Milk Processors and USA TODAY are pleased to bring you the 12th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) 2009 Award Program.

Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place.

Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last 12 months. The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member. Winners are selected based on the project chosen, the benefits of the project and the actual outcome of the project. WINNERS/AWARDS: Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6-12 and 13-18) More than 2,000 store level winners are expected to receive a $50 Kohl's Gift Card. More than 190 regional winners are expected to be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education. AP Fees The main office will begin collecting AP fees on Tuesday, February 17th. Each exam is $86 and checks should be made payable to "University High School." SUMMER OPORTUNITY JUNIORS Economics For Leaders (EFL)

Calling all Artists The Firebird, our very own UHS newspaper, is looking for submissions of original art work and/or comics. These can be art in any medium. Stock Market Club The spring semester stock market competition begins next week. See Mr. Gile to receive your user id and password to log in to begin your simulated trades of $100,000. Given the current economic climate the challenge is just to maintain your account balance without losing money. Individual or team sign ups are welcome. Fresno City College Placement Test Fresno City College will be hosting another placement test on Wednesday, February 18th from 3:00-5:30pm in room 14. We are asking for one parent volunteer of each classroom to monitor and collect the items. Spring Fundraiser committee members will take care of the wrapping.

SAMMY 2009 Scholarship
America's Milk Processors and USA TODAY are pleased to bring you the 12th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) 2009 Award Program.

The Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship
Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place.
CRITERIA: The young person's actions must be described in detail and should document efforts that are above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age. Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last 12 months. The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member. Winners are selected based on the project chosen, the benefits of the project and the actual outcome of the project. WINNERS/AWARDS: Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6-12 and 13-18) More than 2,000 store level winners are expected to receive a $50 Kohl's Gift Card. More than 190 regional winners are expected to be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education. The San Joaquin Section of the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare & Attendance (CASCWA) is awarding eight scholarships to high school seniors!

CSF sign-ups Attention all students: California Scholastic Federation (CSF) applications are due by 12:15 PM on Friday, February 13 to Dr. Torrance in person in room 10. Mock Trial Congratulations once again to the UHS Mock Trial Team!! With much hard work, our Prosecution Team was able to defeat Central High School. It was a hard fought victory for the UHS students. This means that for the second year in a row, we have gone 4-0, which puts us into the Semi-Final Round. Team members, when the individual scores are sent out, they will be posted outside Rm 9. THERE WILL BE AN ALL TEAM MEETING FRIDAY, 12:00, IN RM 9!!!!

Cookies and water are needed for Open House on March 3rd.

Spring Fundraiser Themed Baskets.
This year we will again ask teachers of each 2nd period classroom to enlist the students with the donation of items for our silent auction.
We are asking for one parent volunteer of each classroom to monitor and collect the items. Spring Fundraiser committee members will take care of the wrapping.
Raffle tickets will be sold on March 3rd at Open House.
Please stop by our table in front of the office to purchase your raffle tickets for some great prizes.
We will need volunteers for this as well. Details to follow.

SAMMY 2009 Scholarship
America's Milk Processors and USA TODAY are pleased to bring you the 12th annual "Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year" (SAMMY) 2009 Award Program.

This scholarship recognizes outstanding scholar athletes in grade 12 from high schools throughout the U.S.

25 selected winners will receive a $7,500 scholarship and a trip to Disney World Florida, along with a milk mustache ad.

The Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship
Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place.
CRITERIA: The young person's actions must be described in detail and should document efforts that are above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age. Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last 12 months. The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member. Winners are selected based on the project chosen, the benefits of the project and the actual outcome of the project. WINNERS/AWARDS: Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6-12 and 13-18) More than 2,000 store level winners are expected to receive a $50 Kohl's Gift Card. More than 190 regional winners are expected to be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education. Ten national winners will receive $5,000 scholarships and Kohl's will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on thier behalf.

CASCWA Scholarship
The San Joaquin Section of the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare & Attendance (CASCWA) is awarding eight scholarships to high school seniors!

This award is not necessarily for those who have maintained a 4.0+ gpa, but rather, for those who improved throughout their high school career. They're looking for students who may have had to overcome obstacles and adversity in their lives, including but not limited to personal or family problems.
