Peer Mentor Meeting There will be a Peer Mentor meeting Wednesday, September 2nd in room 18 at 12:15. Bring your lunch.



Lunch Option at University Dining Hall
University Dining Services has offered a special meal plan for UHS students at the FSU Residence Dining Hall.
This meal plan allows students to purchase meals in blocks of five meals to dine at the University Dining Hall for lunch only.
Price of a five meal block: $37.50
Please come by the UHS Office to pick up a flyer with more details.



CSF Sign up Important: CSF membership applications are due TO ME IN PERSON IN ROOM 10 BEFORE Thursday, September 10 by 12:10 PM, no exceptions. DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN MY BOX IN THE OFFICE Get application and course lists from Dr. Torrance in Room 10. Fill out the application and return it, a copy of your grade report for Spring, 2009, and a check payable to UHS for 10 dollars. List your community service on the back of the application (10 hours minimum). Also note: Life Membership requires membership 4 out of six semesters from grades 10-12, including at least one semester as a SENIOR. Freshmen CJSF members are automatically accepted in CSF for the first semester. All they need to do is fill out an application and show they were CJSF members. They donÕt even have to pay the $10.00 fee this semester. Questions: See Dr. Torrance IN ROOM 10 or call 278-0436.

Creative Writing Club Starts University High School Creative Writing Club Dr. Torrance sponsors the Creative Writing Club, which meets once a week in Room 10 at lunch (this year, 2009, on wednesdays from 12:15 to 12:45). Students meet and share original works of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. One of the highlights of being involved with the club is our annual participation in the Young WriterÕs Conference, held each Spring at CSUF. Creative Writing Club members submit their work to the YWC for possible prizes and the honor of being included in the published journal of this event, Spectrum. Relaxed Parking process for UHS Events
New process for visitor parking for UHS events
All visitors coming to campus will be required to display a permit. (Back to School Night-Concerts..etc)
New permit dispensing machines have been installed and will allow guests to enter a coupon code which will issue them a complimentary pass for specific hours.
The permits can be obtained from any one of the 16 permit dispensing machines located around campus. The closest machines to UHS are located off the entrances of Barton or Maple.
Guests will enter a coupon code issued by the UHS office. The coupon code will be published in the bulletin and on the flyers mailed home to announce UHS events.
If you are visiting campus at any other time you can park in the 30 minute zone in front of the UHS office, the parking meters at the side of the school or buy a $3.00 day permit at the dispensing machine.



UHS/Phoenix Alliance Community Directory
Phoenix Alliance would like to announce the NEW
2009-2010 Phoenix Alliance Community Directory Fundraiser.
The new directory will include: all students attending University High School with parent authorized listing of family information (i.e. address, phone, and email); faculty and staff contact information; list of yearly events and more.
This directory will only be published to the UHS community of 2009-2010 current student enrollment, faculty and staff.
Phoenix Alliance would like to include advertisements of the diverse UHS community of businesses/employers; talent (i.e. tutor, seamstress), hobbies (i.e. craftwork, scrapbooking, and photography) and groups (i.e. book clubs, Cancer Survivors, etc.).

Community Opportunities

2010 United States Youth Senate Program The CA Dept. of Education is sponsoring a competition to find two delegates to serve as California's United States Youth Program representatives. These students will participate in a week of intensive study of the US Senate in Wasgington DC during the week of March 6-13, 2010. Updated-Room Change: University of the Arts Visitation Tim Ford will be on campus at noon on September 9th to discuss all of the opportunities available to students at the University of the Arts. If you want to hear more about one of the top art universities in the United States, with programs in visual and performing arts, design, media, and writing, stop by room 13!



St. Mary's College of CA Visitation Stop by room 9 at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15th to find out more about Saint Mary's College of California. St. Mary's is a private, coeducational college located in Moraga, California, United States. It is known for its Liberal Arts education, including its Great Books and Seminar programs. St. Mary's is also well known for their strong business and nursing program. The college is located in Moraga; a small, suburban community located about 13 miles east of Oakland.



Washington University in St. Louis - Danforth Scholars Program If you are interested in applying to Washington University in St. Louis and would like to be considered or the Danforth Scholars program, see your counselor before October 15th. The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated a committment to their community and academic excellence.



Updated- Room Change: Dominican University of California Visitation On Thursday, September 10th, a representative from Dominican University of California will be in room 13 at noon to meet with students. Dominican is an independent university located in San Rafael, 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The special characteristics of Dominican include their 11:1 student to faculty ratio, the Senior Thesis (an intensive research project that provides all students with an opportunity to shine in their chosen fields of study), the Honors Program, the Internship program, and their four year guarantee. Come by to learn more!



University of Southern California Visitation At 8 a.m. on Thursday, September 10th, Allison Ray from USC will be in room 9 to talk to students. USC is unique in its integration of liberal and professional education and is well known for its dedication to research. USC offers such opportunities as the Freshman Seminars and Learning Community Programs that offer rigor and intellectual challenges to incoming students. This private university also boasts over 600 official and unofficial extracurricular activities that allow students to tailor make their college experience. The campus is a series of Renaissance-style buildings located on 155 acres three miles south of downtown Los Angeles.



Westmont College of CA Visitation Come to Dr. Torrance's room on Monday, September 21 at 1:30p.m. to find out why Westmont College is ranked in the US News & World Report "America's Best Colleges 2010" list of liberal arts colleges. Westmont's goal is to provide a rigorous academic program along with a personalized, residential Christian undergraduate experience. Shamrock Shows Educational Scholarship Program - 2009 Big Fresno Fair Shamrock Shows are offering three (3) $1,000 scholarships and plaques to be awarded during or after the 2009 Big Fresno Fair. Eligibility requirements: open to high school seniors who plan to attend an accredited post-secondary institution or trade school (of their choice) in any field of study. Fresno Youth Orchestra
YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF FRESNO AUDITIONS this weekend, Aug 22-23 and next weekend Aug 29-30.
We are now accepting new students for each of our three performing groups.

2010 United States Youth Senate Program The CA Dept. of Education is sponsoring a competition to find two delegates to serve as California's United States Youth Program representatives. These students will participate in a week of intensive study of the US Senate in Wasgington DC during the week of March 6-13, 2010. Dominican University of California Visitation On Thursday, September 10th, a representative from Dominican University of California will be in room 10 at noon to meet with students. Dominican is an independent university located in San Rafael, 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Westmont College of CA Visitation Come to Dr. Torrance's room on Monday, September 21 at 1:30p.m. to find out why Westmont College is ranked in the US News & World Report "America's Best Colleges 2010" list of liberal arts colleges. Freshman Class Elections Attention all Freshman!! If you are interested in being a freshman class officer, sign up in Dr. Gettman's room. There are 5 open offices: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Publicity Chair. There will be a maximum of 4 candidates running for each position, so sign up early because when we have 4 candidates for each office no one else can sign up. Campaigning will start next Monday on August 31st, and voting will be on Friday September 4th. Let your voice be heard!!



CSF Sign up Important: CSF membership applications are due TO ME IN PERSON IN ROOM 10 BEFORE Thursday, September 10 by 12:10 PM, no exceptions. DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN MY BOX IN THE OFFICE Get application and course lists from Dr. Torrance in Room 10. Fill out the application and return it, a copy of your grade report for Spring, 2009, and a check payable to UHS for 10 dollars. List your community service on the back of the application (10 hours minimum). Also note: Life Membership requires membership 4 out of six semesters from grades 10-12, including at least one semester as a SENIOR. University Dining Services has offered a special meal plan for UHS students at the FSU Residence Dining Hall.
This meal plan allows students to purchase meals in blocks of five meals to dine at the University Dining Hall for lunch only.

Creative Writing Club Starts University High School Creative Writing Club Dr. Torrance sponsors the Creative Writing Club, which meets once a week in Room 10 at lunch (this year, 2009, on wednesdays from 12:15 to 12:45). Students meet and share original works of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. One of the highlights of being involved with the club is our annual participation in the Young WriterÕs Conference, held each Spring at CSUF. Creative Writing Club members submit their work to the YWC for possible prizes and the honor of being included in the published journal of this event, Spectrum. All visitors coming to campus will be required to display a permit. (Back to School Night-Concerts..etc)
New permit dispensing machines have been installed and will allow guests to enter a coupon code which will issue them a complimentary pass for specific hours.
The permits can be obtained from any one of the 16 permit dispensing machines located around campus. The closest machines to UHS are located off the entrances of Barton or Maple.
Guests will enter a coupon code issued by the UHS office. The coupon code will be published in the bulletin and on the flyers mailed home to announce UHS events.
If you are visiting campus at any other time you can park in the 30 minute zone in front of the UHS office, the parking meters at the side of the school or buy a $3.00 day permit at the dispensing machine.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF FRESNO AUDITIONS this weekend, Aug 22-23 and next weekend Aug 29-30.
We are now accepting new students for each of our three performing groups.

The final game (the teacher game) will begin at 2:30. Students will be dismissed at 3:00 p.m. Performing groups will NOT be meeting after the Phoenix Bowl concludes!



Ms. Patterson's Hours Ms. Patterson will be on campus daily from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. However, during the week of August 17th, she will be on campus from 8-3 on Wednesday, but will be off campus on Friday.



NEW--Relaxed Parking process for UHS Events
New process for visitor parking for UHS events
All visitors coming to campus will be required to display a permit. (Back to School Night-Concerts..etc)
New permit dispensing machines have been installed and will allow guests to enter a coupon code which will issue them a complimentary pass for specific hours.
The permits can be obtained from any one of the 16 permit dispensing machines located around campus. The closest machines to UHS are located off the entrances of Barton or Maple.
Guests will enter a coupon code issued by the UHS office. The coupon code will be published in the bulletin and on the flyers mailed home to announce UHS events.
If you are visiting campus at any other time you can park in the 30 minute zone in front of the UHS office, the parking meters at the side of the school or buy a $3.00 day permit at the dispensing machine.



2010 United States Youth Senate Program The CA Dept. of Education is sponsoring a competition to find two delegates to serve as California's United States Youth Program representatives. These students will participate in a week of intensive study of the US Senate in Wasgington DC during the week of March 6-13, 2010.
