The date of Magic of the Arts is coming quickly.
This is an event that traditionally all University High School families attend.
We know that many of you wait until the last minute to buy tickets.
This year however, we have invited all alumni and parents of alumni to join us and we don't want them to buy all the tickets before you get a chance to purchase yours.
So please get your tickets as soon as possible and don't wait until the last week.
Call or visit our office to get general seating tickets for $12.

ASB Hollywood Performance Trip
ASB is sponsoring a trip to the Pantages Theater this March 13. We will see the matinee performance of "Cats". Bus and show tickets are $55 for side-mezzanine or $65 for middle-mezzanine seats. Reservations for your seats can be made in the office starting Monday, Oct 26, 12:30 to 1:00 pm, and after 3:00 pm. See Mr. Benslay for more information. Lunch will be at Universal Citywalk, but is not included in the price. Get your tickets quickly, we only have 100 tickets available.

Fresno City College Placement Test
There will be a Fresno City College Placement Test on Monday, November 16th at 3:00pm in room 14. If you are planning to attend Fresno City College next Fall or during the summer for high school enrichment you must take the placement test. Please give your performing group instructors 24 hour notice if you plan to miss class.

Boston College Trip - Mandatory Meeting
All parents of students attending the Boston college visitation elective are required to attend an informational meeting on Friday, December 4th at 7:00 p.m. in Dr. Torrance's room.

The Travel Club is selling cookie dough to raise money for their upcoming trip. The dough is frozen and can be bought in a tub size or preportioned. Delivery will be the first or second week of Dec. just in time for holiday baking. See a Travel Club member or Mr. Benslay to order your dough.

Human Chess Game
The Chess Club is sponsoring a "Human Chess" game on Monday, November 16th at Lunch. We need about 30 volunteers to sign up for the black and white teams as the Chess Club captains battle it out in an all out war!

The Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers High school sophomores and juniors: Submit your poem to the 2010 Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers Contest! The winner will be chosen by The Kenyon Review Poetry Editor, David Baker, and his or her poem will be published in KR! The winner will also be offered a full scholarship to the 2010 Young Writers Workshop at Kenyon College, a residential two-week summer program for aspiring writers. Submissions will be accepted between November 1-30, 2009. Applicants should submit one poem through the online submissions program (link will be live on November 1st). Bentley University Tomorrow25 Award Hey juniors! Bentley University is having their sixth annual Tomorrow25 competition, a leadership program designed to honor 25 high-achieving high school juniors who demonstrate leadership and accomplishment in a variety of ways in order to make positive change in the world around them. The winners will receive a group advertisement in TIME magazine and an all-expenses-paid trip for them and their parents to the 2010 Bentley Leadership Forum. This forum is presented in cooperation with TIME magazine and features prominent leaders from all over the world. It will be held on April 22, 2010 on Bentley campus, located minutes from Boston. Seattle University's Sullivan Leadership Award Competition Sullivan Leaders are selected on the basis of demonstrated service, leadership, and academic achievement and receive full tuition, room, and meals for each of fours years of undergraduate study at Seattle University! Nine Sullivan Leadership Awards are given each year and 36 finalists receive other Seattle University scholarships ranging from $11,000 to $18,500 per year. The Award Application, along with a complete admissions application must be transmitted or postmarked on or before November 15, 2009. Candidates are required to attend the Sullivan Leaders' Day competition on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Seattle University. ACT Poster Concept Contest The ACT is announcing a contest to encourage students to tap into their creativity and qualify for a scholarship of up to $5,000! CAC Announces 2009-2010 Scholarships! The California Association of Collectors has announced a scholarship for California high school seniors for use at any accredited college, university, or vocational school. KFC Colonel's Scholars KFC Colonel's scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need to qualify for their Program. Awards are up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board. Financial Literacy Challenge The Financial Literacy Challenge is an online quiz-based scholarship competition. This year they are offering $2,000 in scholarships! All students have to do is read curriculum located on the website and participate in 2 rounds of quizzes. Students must complete Quiz 1 by October 21st and Quiz 2 by October 31st. Any high school student from grades 9-12 is eligible and no essays, specific GPA, or financial information is required from students! To find out more go to www.knowmoremoney.org
Colby College's Ralph F. Bunche Scholars Program The Ralph J. Bunche Scholars honors program recognizes students of color with demonstrated scholastic strength and leadership potential. Those who qualify, receive special grants (scholarships) as part of their financial aid package. Each Bunche Scholar is not required to work a campus job as part of the financial aid package, and received a one-time $3,000 internship stipend for use during once summer during his or her Colby career. Students interested in being nominated for this program should contact their counselor as a letter of recommendation and an application are required for consideration. Buche nominations are due November 15 for Early Decision 1 candidates, and January 1 for Early Decision 2 and Regular Decision candidates. Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition offers 120 students college scholarships of up to $50,000 and the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. (all expenses paid) to present their research. To enter, students submit a research project that sheds light on a health problem, using the methods of analysis employed by epidemiologists. Epidemiology is the science of exploring patterns of disease, illness and injury within populations with the goal of developing methods for prevention, control and treatment to improve health outcomes. Bentley University is having their sixth annual Tomorrow25 competition, a leadership program designed to honor 25 high-achieving high school juniors who demonstrate leadership and accomplishment in a variety of ways in order to make positive change in the world around them. The winners will receive a group advertisement in TIME magazine and an all-expenses-paid trip for them and their parents to the 2010 Bentley Leadership Forum. This forum is presented in cooperation with TIME magazine and features prominent leaders from all over the world. It will be held on April 22, 2010 on Bentley campus, located minutes from Boston. Seattle University's Sullivan Leadership Award Competition Sullivan Leaders are selected on the basis of demonstrated service, leadership, and academic achievement and receive full tuition, room, and meals for each of fours years of undergraduate study at Seattle University! Nine Sullivan Leadership Awards are given each year and 36 finalists receive other Seattle University scholarships ranging from $11,000 to $18,500 per year. KFC Colonel's Scholars KFC Colonel's scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need to qualify for their Program. Financial Literacy Challenge The Financial Literacy Challenge is an online quiz-based scholarship competition. This year they are offering $2,000 in scholarships! Colby College's Ralph F. Bunche Scholars Program The Ralph J. Bunche Scholars honors program recognizes students of color with demonstrated scholastic strength and leadership potential. Those who qualify, receive special grants (scholarships) as part of their financial aid package. Each Bunche Scholar is not required to work a campus job as part of the financial aid package, and received a one-time $3,000 internship stipend for use during once summer during his or her Colby career. Students interested in being nominated for this program should contact their counselor as a letter of recommendation and an application are required for consideration. Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition offers 120 students college scholarships of up to $50,000 and the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. (all expenses paid) to present their research. To enter, students submit a research project that sheds light on a health problem, using the methods of analysis employed by epidemiologists. Epidemiology is the science of exploring patterns of disease, illness and injury within populations with the goal of developing methods for prevention, control and treatment to improve health outcomes. The winner will also be offered a full scholarship to the 2010 Young Writers Workshop at Kenyon College, a residential two-week summer program for aspiring writers. Bentley University Tomorrow25 Award Hey juniors! Bentley University is having their sixth annual Tomorrow25 competition, a leadership program designed to honor 25 high-achieving high school juniors who demonstrate leadership and accomplishment in a variety of ways in order to make positive change in the world around them. The winners will receive a group advertisement in TIME magazine and an all-expenses-paid trip for them and their parents to the 2010 Bentley Leadership Forum. If you interested in traveling to Costa Rica as your spring elective session stop by Room 5 and pick up some information. Cost is $1200 plus airfare. Freshman through seniors are welcome.

The Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers High school sophomores and juniors: Submit your poem to the 2010 Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers Contest! The winner will be chosen by The Kenyon Review Poetry Editor, David Baker, and his or her poem will be published in KR! The winner will also be offered a full scholarship to the 2010 Young Writers Workshop at Kenyon College, a residential two-week summer program for aspiring writers. Bentley University Tomorrow25 Award Hey juniors! Bentley University is having their sixth annual Tomorrow25 competition, a leadership program designed to honor 25 high-achieving high school juniors who demonstrate leadership and accomplishment in a variety of ways in order to make positive change in the world around them. The winners will receive a group advertisement in TIME magazine and an all-expenses-paid trip for them and their parents to the 2010 Bentley Leadership Forum. This forum is presented in cooperation with TIME magazine and features prominent leaders from all over the world. It will be held on April 22, 2010 on Bentley campus, located minutes from Boston. Seattle University's Sullivan Leadership Award Competition Sullivan Leaders are selected on the basis of demonstrated service, leadership, and academic achievement and receive full tuition, room, and meals for each of fours years of undergraduate study at Seattle University! Nine Sullivan Leadership Awards are given each year and 36 finalists receive other Seattle University scholarships ranging from $11,000 to $18,500 per year. Financial Literacy Challenge The Financial Literacy Challenge is an online quiz-based scholarship competition. This year they are offering $2,000 in scholarships! Colby College's Ralph F. Bunche Scholars Program The Ralph J. Bunche Scholars honors program recognizes students of color with demonstrated scholastic strength and leadership potential. Those who qualify, receive special grants (scholarships) as part of their financial aid package. Each Bunche Scholar is not required to work a campus job as part of the financial aid package, and received a one-time $3,000 internship stipend for use during once summer during his or her Colby career. Students interested in being nominated for this program should contact their counselor as a letter of recommendation and an application are required for consideration. Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition offers 120 students college scholarships of up to $50,000 and the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. (all expenses paid) to present their research. To enter, students submit a research project that sheds light on a health problem, using the methods of analysis employed by epidemiologists. Epidemiology is the science of exploring patterns of disease, illness and injury within populations with the goal of developing methods for prevention, control and treatment to improve health outcomes. Thank you to everyone who has signed up to volunteer at UHS. This is our first year using a web-based program to recruit volunteers and it has been very successful! We are thrilled to say that we have about 400 parents signed up to volunteer at our school! What incredible parents we have at UHS!
We have already been recruiting help for a number of events including, Magic of the Arts, Freshman and Sophomore field trips, Winter electives and more.
This system allows us to target specific groups (for example, freshman parents) for events and allows you, as parents access to our web-site so that you can get involved!

Seattle University's Sullivan Leadership Award Competition Sullivan Leaders are selected on the basis of demonstrated service, leadership, and academic achievement and receive full tuition, room, and meals for each of fours years of undergraduate study at Seattle University! Nine Sullivan Leadership Awards are given each year and 36 finalists receive other Seattle University scholarships ranging from $11,000 to $18,500 per year. CAC Announces 2009-2010 Scholarships! The California Association of Collectors has announced a scholarship for California high school seniors for use at any accredited college, university, or vocational school. KFC Colonel's Scholars KFC Colonel's scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need to qualify for their Program. Awards are up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board. Financial Literacy Challenge The Financial Literacy Challenge is an online quiz-based scholarship competition. This year they are offering $2,000 in scholarships! All students have to do is read curriculum located on the website and participate in 2 rounds of quizzes. Students must complete Quiz 1 by October 21st and Quiz 2 by October 31st. Colby College's Ralph F. Bunche Scholars Program The Ralph J. Bunche Scholars honors program recognizes students of color with demonstrated scholastic strength and leadership potential. Those who qualify, receive special grants (scholarships) as part of their financial aid package. Each Bunche Scholar is not required to work a campus job as part of the financial aid package, and received a one-time $3,000 internship stipend for use during once summer during his or her Colby career. Students interested in being nominated for this program should contact their counselor as a letter of recommendation and an application are required for consideration. Buche nominations are due November 15 for Early Decision 1 candidates, and January 1 for Early Decision 2 and Regular Decision candidates. Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition offers 120 students college scholarships of up to $50,000 and the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. (all expenses paid) to present their research. To enter, students submit a research project that sheds light on a health problem, using the methods of analysis employed by epidemiologists. Epidemiology is the science of exploring patterns of disease, illness and injury within populations with the goal of developing methods for prevention, control and treatment to improve health outcomes. CAL-ABOTA Scholarship CAL-ABOTA, the California Chapter for the American Board of Trial Advocates is offering an opportunity for students to compete for a cholarship in the amount of $2500. To compete for the scholarship, students must write an essay on the topic of the importance of the Bill of Rights and fill out a short application. Girls Going Places 2009 Award Program This annual awards program is designed to reward the enterprising spirits of girls ages 12 to 18. Every year, prizes totaling $30,000 are granted to three top winners and 12 finalists to further their entrepreneurial pursuits or save for college.

ASB Hollywood Performance Trip
ASB is sponsoring a trip to the Pantages Theater this March 13. We will see the matinee performance of "Cats". Bus and show tickets are $55 for side-mezzanine or $65 for middle-mezzanine seats. Fresno City College Placement Test
There will be a Fresno City College Placement Test on Monday, November 14th at 3:00pm in room 14. If you are planning to attend Fresno City College next Fall or during the summer for high school enrichment you must take the placement test. Please give your performing group instructors 24 hour notice if you plan to miss class.
Costa Rica Trip
If you interested in traveling to Costa Rica as your spring elective session stop by Room 5 and pick up some information. Cost is $1200 plus airfare. Freshman through seniors are welcome.
Science Fair The next meeting for Science Fair will be on Thursday, October 22nd at 12:10 in Room 15. The rules for 2010 are in and we will discuss the next steps to enter Science Fair competition.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to volunteer at UHS. This is our first year using a web-based program to recruit volunteers and it has been very successful! We are thrilled to say that we have about 400 parents signed up to volunteer at our school! What incredible parents we have at UHS!
We have already been recruiting help for a number of events including, Magic of the Arts, Freshman and Sophomore field trips, Winter electives and more.
This system allows us to target specific groups (for example, freshman parents) for events and allows you, as parents access to our web-site so that you can get involved!

Computer Programming Club
The next meeting of the Computer Programming Club will be on Friday, October 23rd at 12:10 in Room 15. We will discuss what people have found out about programming languages to study and Web Design Software.
Volleyball Team Tryouts Volleyball tryouts will be Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 - 4:00 and 4:00 - 4:30. Meet in the grassy area by Mr. Canfield's room. Please make sure you show up to only one tryout time. If you cannot make tryouts, please make sure you go to schoolnotes.com send Mr. Utheim or Mrs. Hayden an email. Practice for tryouts will be on Monday and Tuesday from 3:30-4:30.
Human Chess Game
The Chess Club is sponsoring a "Human Chess" game on Monday, November 16th at Lunch. We need about 30 volunteers to sign up for the black and white teams as the Chess Club captains battle it out in an all out war!

The Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers High school sophomores and juniors: Submit your poem to the 2010 Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers Contest! The winner will be chosen by The Kenyon Review Poetry Editor, David Baker, and his or her poem will be published in KR! The winner will also be offered a full scholarship to the 2010 Young Writers Workshop at Kenyon College, a residential two-week summer program for aspiring writers. Submissions will be accepted between November 1-30, 2009. Applicants should submit one poem through the online submissions program (link will be live on November 1st).
